A Yearly Tradition with a Family Twist
Every year, my sister-in-laws and I escape for a spa day — our standing tradition to hit pause, reset, and laugh our way through massages, facials, and endless cups of tea. This year, I switched it up: instead of just the day trip, I made it an overnight stay with my mom and sister at The Spa at Norwich Inn, tucked away in southeastern Connecticut — and it might have been my favorite version yet.
First Impressions & A Bit of History
Built in 1929, The Spa at Norwich Inn feels like a destination that’s been waiting for you for generations. Once a classic country inn, it’s now one of New England’s most loved wellness retreats — known for its ivy-covered brick exterior, English gardens, and timeless charm. The minute you pull in, life slows down.
Inside, the scent of lavender and eucalyptus fills the air. Check-in comes with your robe, slippers, and locker key — small gestures that signal your weekend of calm has begun.
The inn’s historic character meets modern amenities effortlessly: cozy sitting areas, fireplaces, and hallways lined with photos from its early days. Over the years, it’s become a popular wedding venue too, with manicured lawns and garden courtyards perfect for outdoor ceremonies and receptions that look straight out of a storybook.
The Stay

Our room was a mix of classic charm and modern comfort — think soft linens, marble-topped vanities, and a deep soaking tub that practically begged for a post-spa bubble bath.
Rates typically start around $200–$240 per night, with packages that include access to the steam room, sauna, whirlpool, indoor pool, and fitness center — plus daily breakfast or dining credits depending on your plan.
The Spa Experience

The spa itself is where time melts.
Each visit follows the same comforting rhythm: robe on, phone away, and straight to the quiet room, a softly lit space with warm blankets, tea, and lounge chairs that seem to have a built-in nap button.
This trip, I went all in — a massage, body scrub, and facial. My mom and sister alternated between treatments, smoothies, and relaxation time. Between sessions, we wandered through the sauna, steam room, and whirlpool, stepped out for some fresh air on the patio, or joined a quick fitness class.
When I go with my sister-in-laws, I usually stick to my classic combo — a massage and facial — but staying overnight added a new layer of calm. There’s something about waking up, slipping right into your robe, and knowing you don’t have to rush home afterward.
Dining at Kensington’s
The on-site Kensington’s Restaurant captures everything that makes Norwich Inn special — elegant yet relaxed. Winner of Wine Spectator’s Best of Excellence Award five years in a row, it’s modern, chic, and polished by day, and cozy by night with fireplaces and corner tables perfect for unwinding.

We had every meal there — breakfast, lunch, and dinner — and each was better than the last. The morning eggs Benedict with breakfast potatoes was perfection, while the grilled fish over jasmine rice and veggies at dinner felt light and flavorful. Dessert was a warm bread pudding topped with vanilla ice cream — the kind you think about for days afterward.
During the day, the Spa Juice Bar offers smoothies, teas, and light snacks — a perfect midday recharge between treatments.
Why It’s Become a Tradition
Our annual spa day started as something simple — a girls’ day with my sister-in-laws to unwind and catch up. But over time, it’s become something we all look forward to: the reset we didn’t know we needed.
This year’s overnight trip with my mom and sister felt even more special — quieter, slower, and deeply restorative. We spent the day laughing between treatments, sipping tea in the lounge, and talking about everything and nothing. It’s rare to get uninterrupted time like that.
It’s funny how quickly this place becomes tradition. Once you visit, it’s hard not to come back.
Perfectly Placed
One of the best parts about Norwich Inn is how central it is to some of Connecticut’s best attractions.
Just minutes from Mohegan Sun, it’s easy to pair a day of serenity with a night of live music, shopping, or dinner and drinks at the casino. For golfers, the Norwich Golf Course sits right next door, offering a challenging par-71 layout surrounded by rolling hills — or head a few miles further to the KemperSports Golf Academy at Lake of Isles, where PGA instructors lead lessons for every level.
If you’re extending your trip, nearby Mystic is a must: visit the Mystic Aquarium, Olde Mistick Village, or take a walk through the Mystic Seaport Museum. Wine lovers can explore the Connecticut Wine Trail, and fall visitors can’t miss B.F. Clyde’s Cider Mill, the oldest steam-powered cider mill in the country.
